Energy management system certification: ISO 50001

What is ISO 50001: Energy management ?

Qu'est-ce que

The ISO 50001 standard is an international standard which is applied voluntarily and aimed at developing and establishing a systematic energy management system in order to prioritise energy performance. It is part of the standards framework for management systems based on continuous improvement (such as the ISO 9001- Quality Management System and ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System standards).

Certification of your energy management system according to the ISO 50001 standard allows you to prove that you comply with the energy efficiency policy that you have set yourself. This request for certification is more broadly in line with your quality approach, CSR and environmental policy.

The ISO 50001:2018 standard

The current version of the ISO 50001 standard is that of 2018. This new standard was published in August 2018 and replaces the ISO 50001:2011 standard.

ISO EnMS objectives

Implementation of the ISO 50001:2018 standard aims to:

  • Enable organisations to establish the systems and processes needed to improve energy performance
  • Particularly in relation to efficiency, use and energy consumption.
  • Result in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.

The ISO 50001 standard defines precise requirements in terms of the energy management system (EnMS), allowing an organisation to:

  • Develop and implement a more efficient energy policy
  • Establish objectives, targets and action plans enabling it to meet the commitments expressed in this policy
  • Measure the results of this energy policy using data
  • Take the necessary measures to continuously improve its energy performance.

It contributes to the establishment of a continuous improvement process, which will result in more efficient use of available energy sources, improved competitiveness and a reduction in greenhouse gases. It encourages the implementation of an energy monitoring plan and energy analyses.

  • That it has been audited internally at least once.
  • That a management review has been carried out.

It is aimed at organisations of all types and sizes, regardless of the geographical, cultural and social conditions.

Your questions

Below you will find the most frequently asked questions. If you cannot find the answer to your question, please contact us!

Unlike the implementation of the ISO 50001 standard, which is a voluntary process, carrying out the “mandatory energy audit” has been an obligation for large companies since 2015. They can nevertheless be exempted from this obligation if they can justify being holders of a valid ISO 50001 certification (an ISO 50001 certificate is valid for 3 years). If this ISO 50001 certification is no longer valid, it is not valid and the company must therefore perform an energy audit within 6 months.

Reducing energy costs is the first objective and the first advantage of setting up an ISO 50001 certified energy management system. Depending on the sector, the reduction in energy expenditure is between 5% and 20%.

ISO 50001 is a voluntary international standard for Energy Management Systems which enables lasting energy savings and a significant reduction in energy bills. Intended for public and private organizations, it is based on the principle of continuous improvement.
